Acute Complications of Diabetes Mellitus
Diabetes Mellitus - Group of metabolic disorders sharing common features of hyperglycemia.
Major acute complications of diabetes Mellitus are:-
1- Hypoglycemia
2- Hyperosmolar hyperosmotic syndrome (HHS)
3- Diabetic Ketoacidosis
Hypoglycemia
Ironically, the most common acute complication of DM.
Hyperosmolar hyperosmotic syndrome (HHS)
Most commonly seen in type 2 DM.
Diabetic Ketoacidosis
The persistence of the ketotic state eventually leads to depression in cerebral consciousness and coma.
CLINICAL FEATURES:-
-Fatigue
-Nausea and Vomiting
-Characteristic fruity odor
-Kussmaul Breathing
"KUSSMAUL BREATHING"
Kussmaul breathing is a deep, labored breathing pattern that indicates that the body or organs have become too acidic. The body is constantly doing work to maintain an average temperature and neutral blood acidity.
